REFLECTIONS FROM STAFF MEMBERS

When we have the chance to see someone, not the mistakes they've made or the color of their hair, but see the true essence of someone, we have the opportunity to exchange a gift that changes lives. The Art of Yoga project gives us a way to "see" someone who at times feels invisible, and forgotten.

Yoga Teacher, The Art of Yoga Project, Lithia Program

The girls we work with come from dark pasts of neglect and abuse. The Project exposes them to a new way of living and thinking. They practice gratitude and patience, forgiveness and creativity, which are essential for a woman's well being. The Project enables girls to internally self-reflect and externally work with other women in the community. As a result, they feel empowered and hopeful.

The combination of yoga and art creates a mental / emotional connection for our young mothers.  Yoga moves them in ways they never thought would be possible and brings them new ways to approach the many challenges they will face in their future as single mothers.

Working with the young women at the Lithia Springs Girls House as Program Director for The Art of Yoga Project, I have personally witnessed the transformation in the girls from anger to compassion, blame to inquiry and hostility to forgiveness for the girls themselves and those around them.

The Art of Yoga Project provides the groundwork for young women to begin a new journey, one that leads toward a healthy lifestyle, non-violent communication and most importantly, self love and acceptance.
